Cobo Crowned 2011 Vuelta a España Champion

9/11/2011
On Sunday, September 11, 2011, Juan Jose Cobo, of Fuji-sponsored GEOX-TMC, completed a remarkable journey to the final podium in Madrid, taking his rightful spot at the top after a brilliant defense of the 2011 Vuelta a España's red jersey following his epic Stage 15 win.

The Cantabrian climber, who not long ago considered giving up cycling, undoubtedly delivered the ride of his life on the Angliru, and with the help of his GEOX-TMC teammates - who fought tirelessly the final week to protect their leader - Cobo concluded the 3-week grand tour of his native Spain in red.

Cobo triumphantly stood atop the GC podium beside his Sky competitors - Bradley Wiggins (left) and Christopher Froome (right). With just 13 seconds between them, Froome tried desperately to dislodge Cobo from his wheel in the Vuelta's final week but was unable to get rid of his "red shadow."

The members of GEOX-TMC proudly stand upon the Vuelta podium as the outright winners of the season's final grand tour's Team Classification. With a 10:19 advantage over Leopard Trek, it was a dominant performance for the squad: 2 riders within the Top 5, 3 within the Top 20, and 6 within the Top 50.

Cobo's Vuelta victory wasn't just the pinnacle of his career; it was a defining moment for his bike sponsor, Fuji.
Fuji has been working with the team for the past three years, developing their top-of-the-line road bike - the Fuji Altamira - based on input from the team's staff, mechanics, and most importantly, the riders.

In January of 2010, Fuji V.P. of Marketing Karen Bliss traveled to Spain for team training camp, and while there, toured Cantabria's prehistoric 35,000-year-old Altamira caves, which were filled with Paleolithic drawings and paintings of animals - most prominently, bison.
With their new racing platform as the pinnacle of Fuji's product development, Fuji decided that "Altamira" was the perfect name for their new road racing bike, and the brand wanted to pay tribute to the Cantabrian-based team they partnered with to design it
And so the Fuji Altamira was born. And on Sunday, it won its first grand tour - by the rider known as "The Bison" no less.
Just like the cave is a monument to the development of mankind, the Fuji Altamira - a perfect marriage of lightness, stiffness, and handling - marks a milestone in the development of Fuji carbon road bikes. And on Sunday, it earned Fuji its first ever grand tour victory.
In honor of the brand's Vuelta winner, Fuji will be releasing limited edition Fuji Altamira "Red Bison" framesets. More details to come on Fuji's GEOX-TMC blog: www.fujibikes.com/proteam
